Jan Schakowsky has been electioneering inside polling places across the 9th congressional district. All day long, she has been visiting election judges inside polling places and giving them candy. At 3:30 p.m., at Unity Northwest Church, on E. Central Road, in Des Plaines, Jan Schakowsky promised to help an election judge obtain a congressional internship. Schakowsky has been using pollwatcher credentials to electioneer inside polling places. We believe that is an inappropriate use of pollwatcher credentials. We demand that the Cook County Clerk immediately stop Schakowsky’s electioneering.

Schakowsky’s electioneering inside polling places shows a contempt for the people of the 9th district and for the free and impartial process through which we elect our representatives.

Voters who want to put a permanent end to this corrupt Chicago politicking should go to the polls and do what the Cook County Clerk has failed to do: remove Jan Schakowsky.

In the last 24 hours before polls open, our campaign is finishing strong–canvassing, phone banking, and building enthusiasm and excitement as we head into Tuesday. We know we can do it!

Our opponent, by contrast, has been finishing wrong–harping on a negative message and scaring seniors. Her supporters are stealing yard signs and removing our literature from doorknobs.

The contrast is striking–and revealing.

We are going to stay positive, and remain focused on our goal: winning more votes on Election Day! After 14 months of hard work, this is our chance to give the people of the 9th district a fresh start.

Keep going door-to-door, keep calling, and keep spreading the word. In 36 hours, the polls will close–and we will begin the new task of rebuilding our district and our nation.

Now is the time for us to make a difference and to make history!

In the final days of the campaign, my opponent has resorted to negative campaigning of the worst sort, sending false and nasty mailings that accuse me of saying and doing things that I never said or did. The only uniformly positive mailing she sent was done by a special interest group on her behalf.

Her negative strategy is, in my view, the result of Robert Creamer’s intervention. After Scott Brown won in MA in January, Creamer wrote:

“The moment Brown began to surge, the campaign should have hit back and defined him as a shill for the Big Banks and insurance companies — not the attractive, charismatic outsider he appeared to be to many voters.” Creamer did not care if the charge was true or not–he simply wanted Martha Coakley to demonize Brown, regardless. That is the contempt he has for the truth–and for the voters’ intelligence.

Yet there is reason to believe Schakowsky & Creamer’s last-ditch effort may backfire. Voters in Illinois are sick and tired of negative campaigns. My campaign has focused on the positive things we offer voters. When we have criticized my opponent, we have based our arguments on the available facts. We have vigorously contested any attempts by Schakowsky and her supporters in the media to claim otherwise.

Voters in the 9th congressional district who read Schakowsky’s mailings have learned two things: 1. that she is just like many other career politicians, and worse, when it comes to lying about her opponent; and 2. she in fact has an opponent this time, who is close enough to victory to have her running scared. Few voters will believe the charges she has made. Many more believe that now is the time for us to vote for a fresh start!
