Protecting Our Environment
Clean, Efficient Energy
I will sponsor incentives that will encourage American consumers and industries to invest in energy-efficient and clean technologies. I will also vote to fund research and development of renewable energy resources, while supporting exploration and development of fossil fuels where our technology makes it safe and clean to do so, including parts of northern Alaska and the outer continental shelf.
Science, Not Special Interests
I will oppose interventions that do little to help our environment, and simply create opportunities for self-enrichment by special interest groups. Our policy must be driven by science, not sentiment, and we must consider the overall costs before subsidizing any particular industry. I will also insist that scientific questions and policy questions remain distinct, to prevent confusion between one and the other.
No To Cap-and-Trade
I am against cap-and-trade as a mechanism for controlling carbon emissions. My training in environmental science leads me to conclude that the proposed law would only increase pollution while destroying American jobs. I will introduce legislation requiring government agencies to demonstrate their ability to meet emissions targets before they enforce those rules on the rest of the country.
